Kimiidera Temple

3 of 10 in Wakayama City

Kimiidera Temple (紀三井寺, Kimiidera), founded in 770, sits on a lush hillside near Wakanoura Bay. Known for its early-blooming cherry blossoms, the temple becomes a sea of pink in early spring with 400 trees in full bloom. The vibrant red main hall, surrounded by greenery, creates a stunning contrast that draws photographers and nature lovers alike. Climb the 231 stone steps to reach the main hall and enjoy sweeping views over the bay—especially breathtaking at sunset.

The temple is also a cultural landmark, visited by emperors and located along Japan's oldest pilgrimage route. Inside, it houses sacred Buddhist images designated as Important Cultural Properties. A highlight is the towering, gold-accented wooden statue of the multi-armed Kannon, completed in 2008. Just a short walk from Kimiidera Station, this historic site blends spiritual beauty, history, and natural splendor.
