To reach the temple from JR Wakayama Station, take a local train heading south and get off at Kimiidera Station (just two stops away). From there, it’s a 10-minute walk to the temple.

Kimiidera Temple
Kimiidera Temple (紀三井寺, Kimiidera), established in 770, is a historic and picturesque site nestled on a lush hillside overlooking Wakanoura Bay. The temple is particularly famous for its early-blooming cherry blossoms, which transform the area into a stunning sea of pink each spring when 400 cherry trees are in full bloom. The temple’s vibrant red main hall, framed by lush greenery, creates a breathtaking contrast that draws both photographers and nature enthusiasts. To reach the main hall, visitors must climb 231 stone steps, and the view from the top offers sweeping vistas of the bay, with the scenery being particularly captivating at sunset.
Beyond its natural beauty, Kimiidera Temple holds significant cultural and historical value. It is one of the key landmarks along Japan’s oldest pilgrimage route and has been visited by emperors throughout history. Inside the temple, you’ll find sacred Buddhist artifacts, including items designated as Important Cultural Properties. A major highlight is the impressive, gold-accented wooden statue of Kannon, the multi-armed goddess of mercy, which was completed in 2008. Located just a short walk from Kimiidera Station, this spiritual destination offers a harmonious blend of history, culture, and the natural beauty of its surroundings.
