The best place to view the island is Rinkai Park. While you can’t go on the island itself, the park offers the best view of the sunset behind it. There’s a bus stop right next to the park called Rinkai (Engetsu Island). Near the bus stop, you’ll also find a fantastic seafood restaurant that’s definitely worth a visit.

Engetsu Island
Engetsu Island (円月島, Engetsu-jima) is one of Shirahama’s most iconic landmarks, renowned for its stunning natural beauty. This small, scenic islet features a remarkable rock formation with a perfectly round hole in the center, creating a unique and striking silhouette against the sea. Situated just off the western coast, Engetsu Island offers an unforgettable sight year-round, but it is particularly breathtaking during the spring and autumn months. On certain days, the setting sun aligns perfectly with the hole, casting a beautiful and romantic glow through the rock, making it one of the region’s most picturesque sights.
The name “Engetsu” translates to “Full Moon,” a nod to the shape of the hole in the rock, which resembles the lunar phase. Although visitors are not permitted on the island, the best vantage point is from the nearby coast, where you can enjoy its beauty, especially at sunset. It’s a perfect spot for photography, where nature’s geological wonders combine with the seasonal beauty of the sky. Whether you're a nature enthusiast or a photography lover, Engetsu Island offers a serene and awe-inspiring experience that should not be missed when visiting Shirahama.
