Engetsu Island

6 of 9 in Shirahama

Engetsu Island (円月島, Engetsu-jima) is one of Shirahama’s most iconic sights—a small, scenic islet with a perfectly round hole in the center of its rock formation. Floating just off the western coast, it creates a striking silhouette against the sea. On certain days of the year, especially during spring and autumn, the setting sun aligns perfectly with the hole, offering one of the most beautiful and romantic views in the region.

The name “Engetsu” means “Full Moon,” inspired by the shape of the hole in the middle of the rock. While you can't go on the island, it’s best admired from the nearby coast, especially at sunset. Bring your camera and enjoy this natural wonder that blends geology with seasonal beauty.

Getting there

The best place to see the island is Rinkai Park. You can’t go on the island itself, but from the park you’ll have the best view of the sunset behind the island. There’s a bus stop right next to the park called Rinkai (Engetsuto Island). Near the bus stop, you’ll also find a delicious seafood restaurant that’s definitely worth a visit.
