Oshima Island
Oshima Island (大島, O-shima) offers a peaceful getaway just off Cape Shionomisaki, easily accessible via a modern bridge. The island charms visitors with dramatic coastal views and scenic walking trails, especially the one leading to a lookout over the stunning Umikongo Coast. This rugged coastline is named after Korea’s Mount Kongo and offers a breathtaking photo opportunity.
What makes Oshima Island truly special are its two culturally rich museums. The Turkish Memorial Museum honors the 1890 shipwreck of a Turkish vessel and the heartfelt aid given by local residents—a moment that sparked lasting friendship between Japan and Turkey. The Japan-US Friendship Museum commemorates the arrival of two American trade ships in 1791, marking the first amicable exchange between Japan and the U.S. Together, these museums tell a moving story of Oshima’s global connections.
