Daishi Kyokai is in the center of Koyasan, just a 5-minute walk from the Senjuinbashi intersection and close to both Garan and Kongobuji Temple.

Daishi Kyokai
Daishi Kyokai (大師教会, Daishi Kyōkai), the administrative center of Shingon Buddhism, plays a key role in preserving and disseminating the teachings of Kobo Daishi, the sect’s founder. The complex comprises two buildings: the Henjoden, a traditional temple hall constructed in 1915 in honor of Kobo Daishi, and a modern facility dedicated to administration, lectures, and training. This modern building also features an English information desk to assist international visitors. At Daishi Kyokai, visitors are encouraged to actively participate in Buddhist practices through two main activities: the Buddhist precepts ceremony (jukai) and sutra copying (shakyo). These activities offer a deeper connection to the teachings of Shingon Buddhism and are open to all who wish to participate.
The jukai ceremony allows individuals to formally repent for past wrongdoings and commit to living according to Buddhist principles, without requiring formal conversion to Buddhism. Conducted in a dimly lit room adjacent to the Henjoden, participants recite the Ten Wholesome Precepts alongside a priest, creating a contemplative and meditative environment. The ceremony lasts about 30 minutes, and each participant receives a certificate upon completion. Another opportunity for engagement is shakyo, the practice of copying Buddhist sutras. In this practice, visitors trace the Heart Sutra, offering a peaceful, meditative experience that helps cultivate mindfulness. No prior reservation is necessary for either activity, making them accessible to anyone interested in exploring Buddhist traditions.
