Daimon Gate
Daimon Gate (高野山 大門, also known as Dai-mon) serves as the grand western entrance to the sacred temple town of Koyasan. Standing 25.1 meters tall, this multistoried gate is a breathtaking sight, particularly when bathed in the golden hues of sunset or illuminated by lights at night. Its towering presence and serene beauty make it a popular spot for photos, while its peaceful ambiance offers travelers a moment to pause, reflect, and connect with the spiritual atmosphere of the area. Whether viewed from a distance or up close, Daimon Gate embodies the sense of awe that visitors feel upon entering Koyasan.
Completed in 1705, Daimon Gate holds significant historical and cultural importance. On either side of the gate stand powerful guardian god statues, intricately carved by Buddhist sculptors Koi and Uncho during the Edo period. These fierce protectors not only enhance the gate's visual impact but also contribute to its spiritual presence, reinforcing the gate’s role as a symbol of protection. As one of the most iconic landmarks of Koyasan, Daimon Gate reflects the deep-rooted traditions of the region and stands as a testament to the skill and devotion of the artisans who crafted it.
