Avenue of Metasequoias

3 of 9 in Takashima City

The Avenue of Metasequoias (メタセコイア並木道) in Shiga Prefecture is one of Japan’s most visually captivating natural attractions. Stretching approximately 2.4 kilometers near Makino Highland, this elegant road is flanked by nearly 500 towering metasequoia trees, forming a perfectly symmetrical canopy that transforms with the seasons. In spring, fresh green leaves shimmer in the sunlight; summer brings cool, shaded walks beneath dense foliage; autumn ignites the avenue in fiery shades of red and gold; and in winter, snow-covered branches create a hushed, fairytale-like landscape. It’s a favorite spot for photographers, couples, and nature lovers eager to capture its year-round beauty.

Visitors can stroll, cycle, or drive along the scenic route, immersed in the tranquil countryside of Takashima City. Benches and rest areas invite passersby to pause and soak in the view, while nearby attractions—like Makino Pic-Land with its seasonal fruit picking and farm-fresh produce—add a touch of local charm. The Avenue is especially atmospheric in the early morning or late afternoon, when sunlight filters through the trees and casts golden light across the path. Whether you're planning a romantic getaway or a leisurely countryside drive, this iconic landmark promises a serene, unforgettable escape into Japan’s natural splendor.
