Murakumo Zuiryuji Temple is located at the summit of Mount Hachimanyama. You can reach the top by taking the Hachimanyama Ropeway, whose lower station is about a 20–25 minute walk from Omihachiman Station. Alternatively, take Omihachiman City Bus #5, which stops near the ropeway’s base station.

Murakumo Zuiryu Temple
Murakumo Zuiryu Temple (日蓮宗 瑞龍寺) sits atop the mountain where the main citadel of Hachiman Castle once stood, offering panoramic views and a deep connection to local history. Relocated from Kyoto in 1961, the temple was established to honor Toyotomi Hidetsugu, the nephew of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and former lord of the original castle. Its serene mountaintop setting—complete with moss-covered stone paths and towering cedar trees—creates a tranquil atmosphere ideal for quiet reflection. Entry to the temple’s outer grounds is free, inviting visitors to wander through the peaceful precincts and admire the scenic landscape that once surrounded a samurai stronghold.
Beyond the main gates, those wishing to explore further can pay a small admission fee to access the inner hall. Inside, visitors will encounter memorials, refined Buddhist iconography, and architectural details that reflect the temple’s Kyoto heritage. Informational signage in Japanese provides context on the temple’s connection to the Toyotomi clan. The dramatic setting makes it a favorite spot for seasonal photography—particularly in autumn, when vibrant foliage blankets the hillside. Whether reached by foot or via the Hachimanyama Ropeway, the journey to the summit is richly rewarded with a hidden cultural treasure nestled in the mountains of Omi Hachiman.
