Murakumo Zuiryu Temple

Murakumo Zuiryu Temple

9 of 9 in Omi Hachiman

Murakumo Zuiryu Temple (日蓮宗 瑞龍寺) sits atop Mount Hachiman, on the very grounds where Hachiman Castle’s main citadel once stood. The temple was relocated here from Kyoto in 1961 and honors Hidetsugu, the nephew of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and former lord of the castle. Surrounded by quiet forest and sweeping mountain views, the temple grounds have a calm, reflective atmosphere that contrasts with the strategic and turbulent history of the site. Visitors can freely wander the outer precincts, where moss-covered stone walls and shaded pathways hint at centuries of change.

Those wishing to delve deeper into the temple’s spiritual and cultural heritage can enter the inner halls for a small admission fee. Inside, traditional architectural details, memorial altars, and subtle decorative elements offer insight into both the temple’s devotion and the legacy it preserves. The mountaintop location also provides scenic overlooks, making the temple a rewarding stop for travelers combining history, nature, and quiet contemplation during their visit to Omi Hachiman.
