The Tourist Information Centre at Omi Hachiman Station is the best place to get more information or book one of the cruises. It’s located right in front of the station.
Hachiman-bori Canal Boat Cruises
Experience the gentle atmosphere of the Hachiman-bori Canal on a relaxing boat cruise through the heart of Omi Hachiman’s historic district. Two operators offer distinct styles of cruising along the waterway. One uses traditional wooden boats guided by a boatman with a pole, allowing visitors to drift slowly beneath willow branches and past elegant old merchant houses that once lined this important trade route. The other offers engine-powered boats that travel a bit farther, providing a wider perspective of the canal as it transitions from preserved heritage zones into more contemporary surroundings. Each cruise lasts around 35 minutes, offering plenty of time to enjoy the calm reflections on the water and the scenic townscape.
Before boarding, visitors are asked to remove their shoes, a custom that adds a touch of simple comfort and keeps the tatami-style seating spaces clean. As your boat glides along, you gain a deeper sense of how the canal once supported commerce and daily life, while also appreciating how beautifully the area is maintained today. The experience is peaceful and immersive, making it an ideal way to observe the town’s architecture, seasonal colors, and slow pace from the water.
