Mimurotoji Temple
Mimurotoji Temple (三室戸寺) is a picturesque sanctuary, often called the "flower temple" due to its exquisite seasonal gardens. Established over 1,200 years ago, it offers breathtaking displays of nature throughout the year: cherry blossoms in April, vibrant azaleas in May, lush hydrangeas in June, blooming lotuses in summer, and fiery autumn foliage in November. The temple enshrines a revered statue of the thousand-armed Kannon Bodhisattva, the goddess of mercy, and features charming statues of an ox and a rabbit. According to local belief, touching the ox’s stone ball is said to bring success, while spinning the rabbit’s sphere grants wishes.
Beyond its floral beauty, Mimurotoji Temple boasts a variety of sacred structures and symbols that enrich its spiritual atmosphere. Visitors can admire the elegant three-tiered pagoda, visit the Amida Buddha Hall, and encounter the statue of Ugajin, a local deity associated with fortune and prosperity. Patting Ugajin’s head is believed to bring good luck to worshippers. With its harmonious blend of vibrant nature, historical significance, and spiritual traditions, Mimurotoji offers visitors a peaceful retreat where they can experience both the cultural richness and natural beauty of Uji.
