Nintendo Museum

8 of 16 in Uji

The Nintendo Museum, which opened in October 2024, offers an immersive journey through the rich history of one of Japan’s most iconic companies. Located in Uji City, just south of Kyoto, the museum is housed in the former Nintendo Uji Ogura Plant, where the company once manufactured playing cards and game equipment. The exhibits trace Nintendo’s remarkable transformation from its founding in 1889 as a maker of handmade Hanafuda playing cards to its rise as a global leader in the video game industry. Visitors can explore rare artifacts, including early Hanafuda decks, classic Game & Watch handhelds, original consoles like the Famicom (NES), Super Famicom (SNES), Game Boy, Nintendo 64, Wii, and Switch, as well as development materials, concept art, and prototypes from iconic franchises such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, and Pokémon. Interactive exhibits allow guests to experience Nintendo’s innovation firsthand, including hands-on demonstrations of historical hardware and a unique Hanafuda card-making activity that highlights the company's origins.

Admission includes a set number of coins that visitors can use to play a variety of vintage arcade machines and classic Nintendo games, recreating the nostalgia of earlier eras. Additional coins can be purchased on-site for extended gameplay. The museum also features an exclusive gift shop offering limited-edition merchandise, collectibles, and memorabilia unavailable elsewhere, along with a themed café serving Nintendo-inspired snacks and drinks. With its combination of history, interactive fun, and exclusive experiences, the Nintendo Museum is a must-visit destination for lifelong fans and newcomers alike.
