Kikko Shrine

4 of 9 in Iwakuni

Kikko Shrine (吉香神社) is a historic and revered site, dedicated to the Kikkawa family, who once ruled over the region during the Edo Period. Established in 1884, this family shrine is situated above the former residence of the influential Kikkawa Clan. It honors the spirits of the family’s successive generations, with the current structure originally built in 1728 and later relocated to its present location in 1885. The shrine's deep connection to the Kikkawa legacy makes it an important cultural landmark for both locals and visitors.

The scenic beauty surrounding Kikko Shrine changes dramatically with each season, offering visitors a fresh experience year-round. In spring, the grounds come alive with the delicate blooms of cherry blossoms and vibrant azaleas. During the summer, hydrangeas bloom, adding color to the lush landscape. Fall brings an even more spectacular transformation, as the foliage turns vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, complemented by the golden ginkgo trees. In 2004, Kikko Shrine was designated an Important Cultural Property, further solidifying its place as a symbol of Iwakuni’s rich heritage. The tranquil atmosphere and historical significance make it a perfect destination for those seeking both natural beauty and a deeper connection to the past.
