Katsuro Taro Residence
The Katsura Taro Residence (桂太郎旧宅) offers a fascinating insight into the early life of Katsura Taro, one of Japan’s most influential political figures, who served as prime minister three times during the Meiji and Taisho periods. Originally built in a different location, the residence was moved to its current site in 1909, where it has been carefully preserved as a historical landmark. The home’s design is a fine example of the era's refined architectural style, with tatami mat rooms that reflect the elegance of the time. Visitors can step into the past as they explore these rooms, experiencing the living space of a key political leader.
In addition to the beautiful interiors, the residence features a tranquil garden that enhances the serene atmosphere of the property. A stream, flowing from a nearby waterway, meanders through the garden, contributing to the peaceful environment. One of the most unique aspects of the residence is its pebble drain, located in front of a wash basin. When water flows into it, the drain produces bright, melodic sounds, offering a delightful and subtle auditory experience. This thoughtful design element, combined with the home’s historical and architectural significance, allows visitors to appreciate not only the lifestyle of a prominent political figure but also the ingenuity and elegance of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
