In Matsue Former Samurai District district —
4 of 14 in Matsue

Lafcadio Hearn’s Former Residence is a fascinating cultural landmark, offering visitors a deep insight into the life of one of the first Western authors to immerse himself in Japanese culture. Hearn lived in Matsue for about a year during the late 19th century, and his former home is now open to the public. The residence showcases elements of Hearn's daily life, providing a glimpse into the environment that inspired much of his writing. Situated next door, a museum dedicated to Hearn offers further exploration of his legacy, featuring exhibits about his role in bridging Western and Japanese cultures.

Born in Greece in 1850, Lafcadio Hearn led an adventurous life before settling in Japan in 1890. After marrying a Japanese woman and adopting the name Koizumi Yakumo, he became a naturalized Japanese citizen. His works, including Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan and Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things, introduced the Western world to Japan’s rich cultural traditions and folklore. Hearn’s writings remain influential, helping to shape Western perceptions of Japan during the Meiji period. He passed away in Tokyo in 1904, but his contributions continue to resonate, making his former residence a must-see for those interested in the cultural exchange between Japan and the West.
