Onomichi City Museum of Art
The Onomichi City Museum of Art (尾道市立美術館) is a striking example of contemporary architecture, nestled within the serene landscape of Senkō-ji Park. Designed by world-renowned architect Andō Tadao, the building reflects his signature minimalist style—clean lines, exposed concrete, and a thoughtful interplay of light and space. Expansive windows frame sweeping views of Onomichi’s hillside townscape and the Seto Inland Sea, blurring the boundary between art and nature. Its elevated setting not only offers a tranquil atmosphere but also serves as a peaceful retreat from the bustle of the city below.
Inside, the museum presents a refined collection of modern and contemporary artworks, with a particular focus on artists connected to Onomichi. Highlights include works by Kobayashi Wasaku, a celebrated local painter known for his expressive landscapes and rich color palettes. Rotating exhibitions feature both Japanese and international artists, offering fresh perspectives with every visit. Whether you're an art enthusiast or simply seeking a moment of quiet inspiration, the Onomichi City Museum of Art offers a harmonious blend of creativity, architecture, and natural beauty—making it a cultural gem tucked into the heart of the city’s historic hillside.
