Hakkodamaru Ship
The Hakkodamaru Ship (八甲田丸, Hakkōdamaru) is a former ferry that now serves as a museum in Aomori Port. Before the Seikan Tunnel opened in 1988, ferries like the Hakkodamaru were vital for travel between Honshu and Hokkaido. With the tunnel's opening, ferries became less important, but car ferries still connect Aomori with Hakodate. The Hakkodamaru retired in 1988 and has since been moored as a memorial to the era of ferry travel. Visitors can explore many parts of the ship, including the promenade deck, preserved cabins, and the engine room.
A self-guided tour provides insight into the history of Aomori Port and its people through photo displays, dioramas, and model ships. The most unique feature of the Hakkodamaru is its vehicle deck, which once carried up to 48 rail cars. Historic trains, including an express car, mail car, and diesel locomotive, remain on display here. The Hakkodamaru and its sister ships are living reminders of a bygone era of ferry travel.
