Shuri Castle (首里城, Shurijō), located in the heart of Naha, is an iconic symbol of Okinawa’s rich history and culture, representing the former capital of the independent Ryukyu Kingdom. Built in the 1300s, this UNESCO World Heritage site served as both the royal residence and administrative center for centuries, playing a pivotal role in unifying the island. Despite being destroyed multiple times, including during World War II and a devastating fire in 2019, ongoing restoration efforts aim to revive the castle's grandeur. The main hall is expected to reopen in 2026, allowing visitors to once again experience its cultural significance. In the meantime, the castle grounds remain open, where visitors can stroll through its historical gates, such as the iconic Shureimon, and enjoy sweeping views of Naha from the hilltop.

Shuri Castle’s distinctive vermilion architecture sets it apart from traditional Japanese castles, showcasing the unique Ryukyu style. The central Seiden Hall, once the site of important state ceremonies, is adorned with intricate carvings and bright, vivid colors that highlight the island’s distinct cultural heritage. Although the interiors are currently under restoration, the surrounding areas, including Una Plaza and its imposing gates, offer visitors a glimpse into the kingdom's royal past. Cultural exhibits continue to draw visitors in, with displays of artifacts that illuminate the history and traditions of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The castle’s blend of cultural richness and architectural beauty makes it a must-see destination for anyone exploring Okinawa’s historical legacy.
