Katsuren Castle
Katsuren Castle Ruins (勝連城跡, Katsurenjō-ato) perch atop a commanding hill near Okinawa’s eastern coast, offering visitors panoramic views of the sparkling ocean and the surrounding lush countryside. Although only the stone walls and foundations remain, the site still exudes an undeniable atmosphere of ancient power and intrigue. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Castles of the Ryukyu Kingdom, Katsuren Castle is an essential stop for those interested in Okinawa’s rich history. Its strategic location, with breathtaking views, makes it a favorite spot for history buffs and photographers alike.
The castle is most famous as the 15th-century stronghold of Lord Amawari, a legendary figure whose story is steeped in both triumph and tragedy. Born frail and abandoned in the mountains, Amawari defied expectations and survived, rising to power. He eventually overthrew a cruel ruler, seizing control of Katsuren Castle. However, his growing ambition led him to challenge Shuri Castle, which ultimately resulted in his downfall. As visitors explore the ruins, they can imagine the dramatic events that unfolded within the castle’s walls and feel the echoes of Amawari’s ambition and tragic fate.
