Sunayama Beach

Sunayama Beach (砂山ビーチ) is one of Miyako Island’s most distinctive coastal landmarks, celebrated for its powdery white sand, luminous turquoise waters, and the dramatic rock arch that frames the shoreline like a natural sculpture. Tucked behind a low sand dune, the beach reveals itself after a short, gently sloping walk from the nearby parking area—an approach that heightens the sense of discovery as the sea comes into view. The compact cove is bordered by jagged limestone outcrops and wind-sculpted terrain, creating a contrast between the rugged backdrop and the calm, inviting shoreline. It’s especially appealing to travelers seeking a laid-back atmosphere where they can sunbathe, wade into the crystal-clear shallows, or simply sit and watch the waves roll in without distraction. Although the beach remains largely undeveloped, basic amenities such as public restrooms and outdoor showers are located close to the entrance for added convenience.

Despite its modest size, Sunayama Beach draws visitors year-round thanks to its cinematic scenery and easy access from Hirara, the island’s main town. The natural arch has become one of Miyako’s most photographed coastal features—especially at sunset, when golden light spills through the opening and reflects softly on the water below. The beach is easily reached by car or bicycle, making it a popular stop on self-guided island tours or coastal cycling routes. Smooth limestone ledges near the arch provide informal seating, while the tranquil surroundings make it an inviting place for reading, sketching, or simply soaking in the scenery. With its combination of sculpted rock, shimmering water, and sparse crowds, the beach offers an atmosphere that feels both intimate and untamed.
