Miyazaki Prefectural Museum

5 of 5 in Miyazaki

The Miyazaki Prefectural Museum of Nature and History (宮崎県総合博物館, Miyazaki-ken Sōgō Hakubutsukan) is a compelling cultural attraction located beside the tranquil grounds of Miyazaki Shrine. The museum invites visitors to explore the region’s natural environment and human heritage through thoughtfully curated exhibitions. Permanent displays guide guests through Miyazaki’s ecological diversity, featuring native plants, animals, and recreated forest and river habitats. These natural scenes are complemented by life-sized dioramas and detailed models that illustrate the evolution of local life, agriculture, and industry over the centuries.

Behind the main museum building lies one of its most distinctive features: Minkaen, an open-air heritage zone showcasing four authentic thatched-roof farmhouses, each over a century old and relocated from various parts of the prefecture. These traditional homes provide a rare, firsthand look at rural architecture and daily life in historic Japan. Throughout the year, the museum also hosts rotating special exhibitions on regional art, folklore, and archaeology. While most exhibit text is in Japanese, the immersive design, vivid visual storytelling, and cultural authenticity ensure an enriching experience for both local and international visitors.
