Fukuoka Castle Ruins
Fukuoka Castle (福岡城跡), also known as Maizuru Castle, is situated in the scenic Maizuru Park at the heart of Fukuoka City. Built in the early 17th century by Kuroda Nagamasa, this imposing structure was once the largest castle in Kyushu during the Edo period, showcasing the region's military and architectural prowess. The castle's strategic location, with its towering walls and well-fortified grounds, symbolized the power of the Kuroda clan. However, following the Meiji Restoration, much of the castle was dismantled, leaving behind only remnants of its former grandeur, including its stone walls and a few preserved turrets.
Today, visitors to Fukuoka Castle can wander through the tranquil ruins and the surrounding Maizuru Park—a popular destination, particularly during cherry blossom season. The park is renowned for its walking paths flanked by hundreds of cherry trees, creating a spectacular sight as they bloom in spring. While much of the castle's original structure has faded, parts of its history remain intact, including reconstructed gates and guard towers. Visitors can also view sections of the original moat, which adds to the historic charm of the site, making it an ideal spot for both history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
