Toyosu Market (豊洲市場), located on a man-made island in Tokyo Bay, officially opened in October 2018 as the state-of-the-art successor to the legendary Tsukiji Market. Spanning over 40 hectares, this sprawling facility houses one of the world’s largest wholesale seafood and produce markets. It comprises three main buildings: two dedicated to seafood—one of which hosts the iconic early-morning tuna auctions—and a third for fruits and vegetables. Visitors can observe the market’s fast-paced inner workings through glass observation windows and elevated decks, offering a safe and fascinating look into the auction process and daily operations. The market also features a diverse selection of restaurants and eateries, particularly renowned for serving ultra-fresh sushi and kaisendon (seafood rice bowls). At Uogashi Yokocho, a shopping area within the complex, visitors can browse food-related goods, professional kitchen tools, Japanese knives, and souvenirs rooted in the country’s culinary culture.

But Toyosu Market is more than just a wholesale center—it’s a full-fledged food tourism destination. The expansive rooftop garden offers panoramic views of Tokyo Bay, complete with benches and walking paths for a relaxing break. In 2024, the adjacent Senkyaku Banrai complex opened, significantly expanding the market’s attractions with additional shops, restaurants, and a stylish public bath (sento) that even offers overnight stays. The entire area is connected by sheltered walkways and easily accessible via Shijo-mae Station on the Yurikamome Line. Blending traditional Japanese market spirit with cutting-edge infrastructure, Toyosu Market is an essential stop for food lovers, cultural explorers, and anyone interested in Tokyo’s vibrant culinary scene.

I recently visited Toyosu Market, and it was an incredible experience! The market is modern and spacious, with fantastic observation decks that give you a great view of the bustling tuna auctions. Watching the skilled auctioneers and the massive tuna being sold was fascinating. The atmosphere is lively, and you really feel the energy of the place.

After exploring the auctions, I visited some of the sushi restaurants nearby. The freshness and quality of the seafood were outstanding. It was the best sushi I've ever had! Toyosu Market is a must-visit for seafood lovers and anyone interested in Japanese culture.
