Togetsukyo Bridge

In Arashiyama district —
31 of 75 in Kyoto

The Togetsukyo Bridge (渡月橋) stands as the iconic heart of Arashiyama and a lasting symbol of Kyoto's cultural elegance. Originally constructed during the Heian Period (794–1185), the bridge has been rebuilt several times, with its current form dating to the 1930s. Spanning the Katsura River, Togetsukyo offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding forested mountains, which explode into vibrant colors in autumn and transform into a sea of cherry blossoms each spring. Its simple yet graceful design perfectly embodies the harmony between human craftsmanship and nature.

Beside the bridge lies Nakanoshima Park, a tranquil riverside area lined with cherry trees that attract visitors for hanami (flower viewing) each spring. The gentle flow of the river, paired with the seasonal beauty of the landscape, creates an ideal setting for peaceful walks, picnics, and photography throughout the year. Whether crossing the bridge at sunrise or pausing to watch the sunset, Togetsukyo captures the timeless serenity of Arashiyama and offers an unforgettable glimpse into Kyoto’s enduring charm.
