Historic Village of Hokkaido
The Historic Village of Hokkaido (開拓の村, Kaitaku no Mura), located on the outskirts of Sapporo, is an immersive open-air museum that brings to life the region’s history through around 60 preserved buildings from the Meiji and Taisho periods (1868–1926). These structures provide a fascinating look at Hokkaido's rapid development during a time of industrialization and modernization. The village is designed to offer a tangible connection to the past, with each building carefully relocated from various parts of the island to preserve its historical significance.
The museum is divided into four distinct sections: a town, fishing village, farm village, and mountain village, each representing different aspects of life in early Hokkaido. Visitors can explore the town's bustling streets, the serene fishing village by the water, the rustic farmhouses, and the mountain village surrounded by nature. Each area is thoughtfully curated to offer an authentic experience, making the museum a must-visit for anyone interested in Japanese history, culture, and traditional architecture.
