Bitchu Kokubunji Temple

5 of 7 in Okayama

Bitchu Kokubunji Temple (備中国分寺, Bitchū Kokubunji) is best known for its impressive five-story pagoda, completed in 1884. Standing 34.32 meters tall, it is the last pagoda of its kind ever built in Japan. Surrounded by picturesque countryside, the pagoda is especially striking in spring and autumn, offering excellent photo opportunities and a tranquil setting for reflection.

Originally founded in 741, the temple has deep historical roots. Although the original structure was destroyed during a 14th-century civil war, it was faithfully rebuilt in the Edo period. Visitors can explore centuries of cultural heritage and appreciate how Japanese craftsmanship and perseverance have preserved the temple’s spirit through turbulent times. It’s a peaceful and meaningful stop for anyone interested in architecture, history, or traditional Japanese scenery.
