Sumpu Castle is a 10-minute walk from JR Shizuoka Station and even closer to Shin-Shizuoka Station on the Shizuoka Railway line.
Sumpu Castle
Sumpu Castle (駿府城, Sumpujō), originally constructed in 1586 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, holds significant historical value as both a fortress and the site where Ieyasu spent his later years. Although none of the original buildings remain, the castle grounds now serve as a tranquil public park in the heart of Shizuoka City, located just a 10-minute walk from JR Shizuoka Station. Following the Meiji Restoration, the castle was dismantled, but recent restoration efforts have successfully reconstructed important features such as the East Gate and a guard tower. These restored structures house exhibits that offer visitors a glimpse into the castle’s storied past.
Surrounding the castle ruins is Sumpu Park, which is encircled by a historic moat. At the center of the park lies the peaceful Momijiyama Japanese Garden, opened in 2001. Designed in traditional Japanese landscape style, the garden features a central pond, a man-made hill, and meandering walking trails. The hill is a symbolic representation of Mount Fuji, while vibrant azaleas are planted to reflect Shizuoka’s famous tea leaves. A teahouse within the garden serves local tea, offering visitors a perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy the serene atmosphere of this picturesque setting.
