Yokokan Garden

9 of 10 in Fukui

Yokokan Garden (養浩館庭園, Yōkōkan Teien) is a hidden gem in the heart of Fukui City, offering a tranquil escape just a short stroll from the ruins of Fukui Castle. Once the villa and retreat of the Matsudaira feudal lords during the Edo Period, this elegant landscape garden embodies the refined aesthetics of sukiya-style architecture. At its center lies a shallow pond, around which the villa appears to float gracefully—creating a harmonious interplay between water, structure, and nature. Classic garden elements include arched stone bridges, winding paths, and large decorative rocks, some sourced from the dramatic coastal cliffs of Tōjinbō, adding a rugged contrast to the manicured setting.

The original villa was destroyed during World War II but was meticulously reconstructed in the 1990s based on historical records and drawings. The restored interior features multiple tatami rooms, a traditional cedar bathtub, and a moon-viewing platform—evoking the luxurious lifestyle of Edo-period nobility. Visitors are welcome to step inside and experience the space as it was once enjoyed, taking in panoramic views of the pond and garden from the open veranda. Outside, a walk along shaded woodland trails and carefully placed stepping stones offers a sense of timeless serenity, making Yokokan not only a place of beauty, but also one of quiet reflection and cultural depth.
